Prema as Civilizational Witness

Love as the capacity to fully see and grieve what civilization is becoming, without turning away or numbing.

Why It Matters

Mirabai's bhakti tradition teaches prema—divine love—as radical presence with reality. In anticipatory grief for civilization, prema becomes the practice of witnessing what we are losing without dissociating or denying. Rather than steeling ourselves against despair, we cultivate the capacity to love what is ending: ecosystems, ways of life, cultural threads. This examined presence with loss, grounded in devotion rather than doom, creates a different quality of grief—one that connects us to something larger than individual anxiety. Mirabai sang her love even in imprisonment; we learn to sing our witness even as systems collapse. Prema-witness asks: Can we love civilization enough to grieve it truthfully?
