The Question as Prayer

Using questions in communication as acts of sacred inquiry that invite deeper truth rather than as rhetorical accusations or manipulation.

Why It Matters

Mirabai's poems are filled with questions addressed to Krishna—not rhetorical but genuinely seeking understanding: Where are you? Why do you hide? What do you want from me? These questions are prayers, expressions of longing and faith that something true might be revealed. In ordinary communication, questions often mask accusations: 'How could you do this?' means 'you were wrong,' and 'Do you even care?' means 'you don't care.' The question as prayer reframes inquiry as genuine openness: 'I felt hurt by that—can you help me understand what happened?' 'What are you needing that I am not seeing?' 'How can we bridge this gap between us?' These questions create space for real dialogue rather than defensive justification. They communicate trust that understanding is possible and that the other person has interior wisdom worth discovering. Mirabai's devotional questions never assume she knows the answer; they open toward mystery and revelation. This transforms communication from interrogation into intimate exploration of shared reality.
