Radical Love as Freedom

The paradox that surrendering to love of the divine liberates rather than constrains personal autonomy, allowing authentic self-expression within relationship.

Why It Matters

Mirabai's devotion to Krishna was not submission that erased her selfhood, but liberation that freed her from social expectation. In bhakti tradition, love is the doorway to autonomy—when you love without condition, you shed the false self constructed by others' demands. This concept invites us to examine how our deepest relationships (with others, with purpose, with ourselves) can either diminish or expand who we are. Radical love asks: what if surrendering to genuine connection actually strengthens our ability to stand alone? For Autonomy and Togetherness, this means recognizing that the most authentic independence arises not from isolation, but from loving so freely that we need no external validation. Mirabai chose poverty, social exile, and her own path because her love was total—and that totality gave her the courage to be utterly herself.
