The Rhythm of Approaching and Withdrawing

Healthy love communication follows a natural rhythm of intimacy and solitude, connection and reflection.

Why It Matters

Mirabai's relationship with the divine fluctuated between union and separation, ecstatic union and aching distance—cycles she accepted rather than resisting. In human love, we often establish false equilibrium, trying to maintain constant closeness or constant distance. This principle suggests that authentic communication requires rhythm: times of approaching with full openness, times of withdrawing for reflection and renewal. These are not failures of connection but necessary oscillations that prevent fusion and enmeshment. When you withdraw, you return to yourself; when you approach, you return to your beloved with renewed presence. This rhythm prevents the suffocation of too-constant togetherness and the depletion of too-constant exposure. Communication that honors this natural rhythm becomes less demanding: you don't expect constant emotional availability from yourself or your beloved, which paradoxically allows more genuine availability when you are present. This tradition teaches that sustainable love respects the seasons, the tides, the breath itself—expansion and contraction both essential to life.
