Sacred Longing vs. Desperate Clinging

Mirabai distinguishes between spiritual yearning that ennobles the soul and possessive grasping that corrupts love—a crucial distinction for anxious attachment.

Why It Matters

Mirabai's poetry celebrates a longing for Krishna that deepens her spirituality and compassion, even in his absence. Yet bhakti tradition explicitly warns against the possessiveness and grasping that masquerades as devotion. The difference lies in whether your longing expands your heart or contracts it into anxiety. Sacred longing creates generosity, acceptance, and spiritual opening; desperate clinging creates jealousy, control, and anguish. In attachment terms, anxious attachment often confuses these states. You might believe your intense focus on a partner is love when it's actually fear of abandonment dressed as devotion. Mirabai teaches that true love can hold both presence and absence, both union and separation. If your attachment to a partner requires constant reassurance, if you cannot bear their autonomy, if you need them to complete you—these signal clinging rather than sacred longing. The examined heart can discern which is which and consciously cultivate attachment rooted in expansive devotion rather than contractive fear.
