Sakshi-Bhava: The Witnessing Perspective

A practice of observing your own emotional patterns, beliefs, and reactions without being consumed by them.

Why It Matters

Sakshi-bhava—the witness consciousness—is a meditative stance in which you observe your own mind and heart as though watching from a sacred distance. This is not dissociation but clear seeing. When leaving a relationship, emotions arise intensely: grief, rage, relief, guilt, shame, liberation. Rather than being tossed by these waves, sakshi-bhava invites you to notice them: 'This is sadness arising. This is the voice of my old story about being unlovable. This is relief.' Mirabai maintained a perspective that could honor her human heart's longing while remaining devoted to a truth larger than any single relationship. As you navigate separation, this practice allows you to process emotions fully while not being defined by them. You become the mountain from which the river flows, rather than merely the river being swept along.
