Sakshibhava: The Witness Perspective

Sakshibhava is the practice of witnessing your own experience without judgment; it allows you to observe infatuation's arising and patterns while remaining rooted in awareness.

Why It Matters

Sakshibhava means 'the state of being a witness' or 'witness consciousness.' It's a foundational practice in many Hindu and yogic traditions: the capacity to observe your thoughts, emotions, and patterns without identifying with them or condemning them. Applied to infatuation, sakshibhava is revolutionary. Instead of being swept away or fighting the experience, you become the observer of your own falling in love. You notice: How does infatuation arise? What stories do I construct? Where does my attention go? What fears emerge? Mirabai maintained sakshibhava even in her most intense devotion—she reflected on her own longing, questioned her experiences, and channeled them into art. The examined heart cultivates this witness perspective, not to become cold or detached, but to remain present to both the beauty and the delusion of infatuation. Sakshibhava doesn't mean you stop feeling; it means you feel while remaining aware of the feeling. This awareness creates space for choice: you can engage your infatuation consciously rather than being possessed by it.
