Sannyasa: The Liberation of Letting Go

Sannyasa is the renunciate path of consciously releasing attachments—a framework for understanding grief of lost identity as spiritual work rather than mere loss.

Why It Matters

Sannyasa traditionally means renouncing worldly life to pursue spiritual truth. Mirabai embodied sannyasa when she left the palace and all its securities. While you may not renounce your entire life, the principle of sannyasa applies to grief for lost identity: you're being asked to consciously release something you were deeply attached to. The bhakti tradition honors this not as punishment but as purification. Each thing you release—status, role, the self others knew—makes space for something more authentic. Sannyasa teaches that attachment is the root of suffering, but the path through attachment isn't denial; it's conscious release. Grief is the work of sannyasa: you're actively letting go rather than being passively torn apart. The practice asks you to identify what you're still clinging to about that former self and practice releasing it deliberately, moment by moment. This transforms grief into spiritual discipline, and your pain into purposeful work on yourself.
