Satsang: Witnessed Grief in Community

The practice of satsang (gathering in truth) as healing container where grief and anger can be expressed and witnessed without judgment or rush to resolution.

Why It Matters

Satsang means gathering in truth or association with the true. Traditionally, it refers to spiritual community and the transmission of truth through presence and shared practice. Mirabai's public performances were a form of satsang—she created containers where her grief, devotion, and defiance could be witnessed and shared. The isolated examination of the heart can become pathologizing; we need satsang to remember that our grief and anger connect us to the human condition. The rage underneath often festers in silence, in the spaces where we believe we are alone in our pain. Satsang healing asks: Who witnesses your truth? Where can you speak your grief without having to comfort others or apologize for the depth of your feeling? True satsang is not about advice-giving or fixing but about creating presence. When others witness our rage without flinching, we learn it is not shameful. When our grief is held by community, it becomes less isolating. Satsang practice invites us to both speak our truth and listen deeply to others'.
