Meeting in the Space Between

The sacred meeting ground where two separate selves communicate by honoring both distance and closeness simultaneously.

Mira
Why It Matters

Mirabai's devotion was conducted across a supposed distance—between mortal and divine, between herself and Krishna. Yet in her poetry, this distance becomes the very space of intimacy. In love communication, the space between two people is neither empty void nor closed boundary but a living field of connection. This concept challenges fusion—the idea that true love means merging—while also resisting isolation. Real communication happens in acknowledgment of separateness: "You are not me, and I honor that, and still I reach toward you." Mirabai's bhakti tradition teaches that the beloved remains ultimately mysterious and other, and this otherness is not obstacle but the very texture of love. When partners communicate from this understanding, they don't demand that the other think as they do or feel as they feel. Instead, language becomes a bridge across necessary distance. This prevents enmeshment and codependency while deepening intimacy. The space between becomes a place of genuine meeting, where two conscious beings choose connection precisely because they remain themselves.
