The disciplined practice of releasing resistance to identity loss, allowing grief to move through you rather than constructing defenses against it.
Mirabai's path required continuous surrender: surrender of her will to her family's will, of her ego to devotion, of her former life to her calling. Surrender in bhakti is not passive resignation but active, conscious releasing. When you grieve lost identity, the ego often fights to preserve its story: I should still be that person, I was better then, this loss is unfair. Surrender practice means laying down that fight and allowing the grief to exist without justification. This is extraordinarily difficult because the ego uses resistance as a way to maintain continuity of identity. By surrendering resistance, you actually complete the grief process rather than extending it indefinitely. Mirabai surrendered her identity not once but continuously, in each moment renewing her choice for devotion over comfort. You are invited to the same practice: each time you notice yourself grasping for who you were, gently surrender that grasp and ask what wants to be born.
