Svatantrya: Freedom as the Ground of Love

The principle of radical independence and self-determination, essential for choosing partners from freedom rather than fear or need.

Why It Matters

Svatantrya means autonomy, independence, and self-determination. Mirabai chose her own path of devotion despite family pressure, demonstrating that love requires freedom as its foundation—not love of family or social duty, but conscious choice. In attachment theory, insecure attachment often stems from violated autonomy: children whose needs were controlled or dismissed, whose feelings were invalidated. These wounds create choosing patterns rooted in reclaiming lost power: anxious attachers cling to regain control; avoidant attachers distance to protect hard-won independence. True attachment security rests on svatantrya—the inner knowing that I can take care of myself, trust myself, and choose freely. When choosing partners, can we ask: Do I choose this person because I want to, or because I'm afraid without them? Do I maintain my own interests, friendships, spiritual practice, or have I collapsed into fusion? The examined heart recognizes that love between two free people is radically different from love born of desperation or obligation. Svatantrya isn't selfishness; it's the prerequisite for genuine intimacy.
