Transgression as Spiritual Practice

Mirabai broke every social rule in pursuit of authentic love; how modern couples can honorably transgress limiting beliefs and conventional expectations to build relationships aligned with their true values.

Why It Matters

Mirabai's entire life was transgressive: a widow pursuing ecstatic devotion; a woman leaving her family; a saint who rejected the ashram and lived as a wanderer. Yet her transgressions were not selfish but spiritual—she broke rules in service of truth. Modern couples often internalize inherited beliefs about what love "should" look like: how eros should manifest, what philos requires, what storge demands. These beliefs may not serve the actual relationship. Mirabai's examined heart teaches couples to question gently: Which conventions do we honor because they align with our values, and which do we follow from fear or conditioning? A couple might transgress by choosing unconventional commitment arrangements, by being publicly affectionate in conservative contexts, by prioritizing their marriage over family expectations, or by redefining gender roles. The key—as Mirabai models—is that transgressions arise from examined conviction, not impulsivity. When both partners consciously choose to break an unhelpful rule together, they deepen trust and align the relationship with their authentic values.
