Transgression as Threshold

The view of infidelity as a crossing into unknown territory that requires conscious choice about what comes next.

Why It Matters

Mirabai crossed many thresholds: she left her husband's house, renounced her caste, danced naked in ecstatic devotion in public. Each transgression was a deliberate movement toward greater authenticity. Infidelity is also a threshold—a crossing from what was into what might be. This is not to glorify the breach, but to acknowledge that once crossed, there is no returning to ignorance. Both partners must now choose consciously. The betrayed partner can choose resentment, forgiveness, recommitment with new terms, or separation—but they cannot choose unknowing. The betrayer has crossed into a new identity and must now choose who they wish to become: a person who integrates this truth into a more honest life, or one who spends years managing the lie. This concept frames infidelity not as failure alone but as initiation. It invites the question: What is this rupture asking of us? What new consciousness is demanding to be born? Some thresholds, once crossed, lead backward to reconstruction; others lead forward to necessary dissolution. Both are sacred if approached with full awareness.
