Tyaga: Releasing Control of the Outcome

A spiritual surrender of the illusion that we can prevent or control loss, freeing energy for presence instead of resistance.

Why It Matters

Tyaga—sacrifice, renunciation, letting go—is central to Mirabai's path. She renounced the roles society prescribed and ultimately surrendered her life itself to her beloved. Anticipatory grief often masquerades as preparation: if we worry enough, imagine every scenario, and maintain emotional distance, perhaps we'll be ready. But tyaga invites a different surrender: the acceptance that loss cannot be prevented, controlled, or made safe through anxiety. This doesn't mean passivity—we can still care for the person, pursue treatments, and create memories. But we relinquish the fantasy that our fear can protect them or us. Tyaga frees tremendous energy. No longer spent on the futile effort to control the uncontrollable, that energy becomes available for presence, service, and love. It's the spiritual maturation that allows us to say: *I cannot stop this. And I can still choose how I meet it.*
