Tyaga: Sacred Surrender

The practice of consciously releasing attachment to outcomes and the illusion of control over loss.

Why It Matters

Tyaga, or sacred surrender, is a liberation practice woven throughout bhakti traditions. It is not passive resignation but active relinquishment—the choice to stop clinging to impossible control. Anticipatory grief often stems from the illusion that if we grieve now, prepare enough, control our emotions precisely, we can somehow soften the impact of loss. Tyaga teaches that this is futile. The examined heart practices releasing the fantasy that planning grief prevents pain. Instead, tyaga invites surrender to what is: this person will die, you will grieve, and your role is not to prevent that but to meet it with integrity. Mirabai surrendered her status, her marriage, her reputation—she let go of what the world said she should cling to. Practicing tyaga now, in small ways (releasing anger at the person, releasing hope for a different past), trains your heart for the larger surrender loss will require.
