The spiritual insight that the deepest togetherness is compatible with—and requires—fundamental separateness.
Mirabai never merged with Krishna; she remained eternally separate from her beloved, and this separation was the source of her devotion, not its obstacle. The paradox she embodies is central to mature Autonomy and Togetherness: you cannot truly belong to another if you have dissolved into them. Union in separation means maintaining your own consciousness, your own body, your own choices while being in profound relationship. It means loving someone you cannot possess, understanding someone you cannot fully know, committing to someone who will always be other than you. This framework dissolves the binary: you do not have to choose between independence and intimacy. The highest togetherness assumes both parties' autonomy—their irreducible otherness—and loves within that reality rather than against it. This is the mature love Mirabai lived.
