The Unrequited Love Framework

Loving what may not return our love—civilization, stability, justice—yet finding meaning in the loving itself.

Mira
Why It Matters

Mirabai's love for Krishna was structurally unrequited: separated by time, by death, by the nature of divine love itself. Yet this did not diminish her devotion; it deepened it. The unrequited love framework offers a way to metabolize anticipatory grief: we can love civilization, love stability, love justice—fully and without reserve—while acknowledging they may not persist in the forms we cherish. The meaning lies not in reciprocal guarantee but in the quality of our devotion itself. This frees us from the contract mentality (I love this world therefore it must reward me) and anchors us in intrinsic meaning. We love because loving is what makes us human, not because we control outcomes. This is how Mirabai remained joyful even in separation.
