Vilasa: Playfulness in Sorrow

The sacred play or divine sport (lila) of existence, including sorrow—a perspective that honors grief without being consumed by its gravity.

Why It Matters

Vilasa, or divine play, is the perspective that even suffering and loss are part of the cosmic dance, not punishments or mistakes. Mirabai understood Krishna's absence as part of his mysterious play with her heart. This is not spiritual bypassing—it is a vast perspective that holds sorrow as meaningful without being final. In anticipatory grief, vilasa offers permission to find moments of lightness, laughter, and even absurdity within the shadow of coming loss. You can grieve deeply and also smile at an inside joke. You can fear abandonment and also enjoy a silly conversation. This both/and capacity—honoring sorrow's reality while refusing to let it eclipse all other colors—is what vilasa teaches. The coming loss is real and significant; the joy in relationship now is equally real and significant.
