Viraha as Generative Longing

The sacred ache of separation (viraha) reframed as a creative force that motivates ethical action and imagines better futures for civilization.

Why It Matters

Viraha—the pain of beloved's absence—was Mirabai's constant companion and her greatest teacher. Rather than numbing this pain, she transformed it into devotional poetry and radical social witness. In the context of anticipatory grief, viraha becomes the longing for a civilization we have not yet fully created: one of justice, sustainability, and wisdom. This ache need not paralyze us; it can fuel imagination and commitment. The grief we feel for possible futures lost is simultaneously a call to action, a clarion of what we still value enough to fight for. Mirabai's example shows that remaining vulnerable to loss, rather than armoring ourselves, opens channels for deeper engagement. Our viraha for civilization becomes the compass pointing toward the world we wish to birth.
