Viveka: Discernment Between Fantasy Loss and Real Change

Viveka (discernment) helps distinguish between imagined loss narratives and actual signs of change, clarifying what anticipatory grief is truly about.

Why It Matters

Viveka is the faculty of discernment—the capacity to see clearly the difference between what is real and what is merely imagined, between wisdom and delusion. In anticipatory grief, the mind often spins scenarios: 'They will forget me. They will die soon. Everything will fall apart.' Much of anticipatory grief is actually grief about stories, not current reality. Viveka invites us to examine: Is this person actually dying, or am I projecting? Are they truly becoming someone else, or am I catastrophizing? What evidence do I have? What am I imagining? This practice is not about denial; rather, it is about honest seeing. Mirabai practiced viveka by distinguishing between her devotional longing (real and valid) and her ego's demands (to be special, to be returned to, to be guaranteed presence). By applying viveka to anticipatory grief, we can often discover that our beloved is still here, still present, still themselves—and our work is to grieve the imagined losses and be more awake to the reality in front of us. When anticipatory grief is rooted in fantasy, viveka is the sword that cuts through confusion and returns us to the precious present moment.
