Viveka: Discrimination Between Real and False Self

Viveka is the discerning wisdom that distinguishes what is essential from what is costume; it prevents you from mourning false identities as real losses.

Why It Matters

Viveka means discrimination or discernment—the capacity to distinguish the eternal from the temporal, the real from the illusory. In Hindu philosophy, viveka is the foundational wisdom for spiritual life: knowing what is worth clinging to and what deserves to be released. Mirabai demonstrated viveka when she consciously chose devotion over dynasty, recognizing that her queen-identity, however honored, was costume masking her true nature. This concept is essential for grief work: not all losses of identity are equal. Viveka asks you to examine: Was who I was truly me, or was it a role I inhabited? Did I lose an authentic self, or did I lose a performance? This discrimination prevents you from getting stuck in grief for a false identity that never served your soul. By applying viveka, you can grieve what was genuinely yours while releasing what was always borrowed. This sharpens your grief into something workable and leads toward integration rather than endless mourning of the inauthentic.
