Why It Matters

Viyoga—separation, absence, longing—is central to Mirabai's poetry. Rather than resolve separation through reunion, bhakti celebrates the ache itself as generative. In the context of anticipatory grief for civilization, viyoga offers a psychological framework: the separation between the world as it is and the world as we hoped it would be need not be resolved into despair. Instead, this gap becomes the creative space where wisdom emerges. Mirabai's songs of longing for Krishna became instruments of spiritual deepening. Similarly, the gap between our hopes for civilization and its trajectory can birth art, scholarship, communities of care, and prophetic vision. Viyoga teaches that persistent, conscious ache—held without numbing—sharpens perception and authenticity. It dignifies grief as a form of love rather than pathology, and transforms the longing itself into a resource for meaning-making and cultural transmission.
