Viyoga: The Grief of Separation

The bhakti framework for understanding loss as permanent separation, allowing us to grieve civilization's transformations without false hope.

Why It Matters

Viyoga—the pain of separation from the beloved—is central to bhakti poetry. Mirabai knew this intimately: longing, distance, the ache of absence. In anticipatory grief, viyoga names the specific sorrow of losing a world we have known. Unlike denial or bargaining, viyoga accepts the beloved's absence while honoring the depth of connection. This framework allows us to mourn civilizational forms—institutions, ecosystems, ways of life—not as failures but as beloved beings we are releasing. Viyoga teaches that grief itself is a form of love, and that naming our separation from what we cherish dignifies both what is lost and our capacity to feel deeply.
