The Witness Stance

Developing capacity to observe collective grief with compassion and clarity rather than being consumed or numbed by shared emotion.

Why It Matters

Mirabai witnessed her own heart with remarkable honesty—seeing her longings, contradictions, and transformations without judgment or escape. The witness stance is capacity to observe collective mourning from position of compassionate awareness rather than being entirely swept away or becoming spectator. When public figures die or tragedies unfold, we're called to feel fully while maintaining inner clarity: to grieve authentically without performative participation, to honor others' pain while protecting our own capacity to help, to acknowledge media narratives without being manipulated by them. The witness develops what Buddhists call 'wise view'—seeing the whole picture while remaining engaged. Mirabai's examined heart cultivated this witness consciousness: she could love deeply while seeing clearly. For collective grief, the witness stance means feeling the sorrow in your body while observing how grief moves through your mind and community, allowing us to mourn genuinely while maintaining the awareness needed for compassionate action and personal resilience.
