Mirabai did not suppress her rage, but she also did not weaponize it. She witnessed it, expressed it, and then acted from a place of clarity aligned with her values. This concept teaches the discipline of the examined heart: there is a difference between feeling anger and being controlled by it. The space between impulse and response is where freedom lives. When grief and rage arise—as they do in all examined lives—this practice asks: Can I feel this fully without immediately acting? Can I express it (in private, in art, in devotion) before deciding how to move? This is not passivity. Mirabai's defiance was active. But her actions flowed from examined rage rather than reactive rage. For practitioners, this might mean: journaling the fury before speaking it, dancing the rage before acting on it, singing the grief before deciding. Mirabai's devotional songs were acts of witnessing her own emotion. Once fully felt and expressed, she could choose her next move. This practice prevents rage from becoming either self-destructive (turned inward) or harmful (weaponized against others). It trusts that feelings are intelligent when given time and space. It suggests that the examined heart does not eliminate rage but matures it.
