Ambiguity and Mystery in Character Understanding

Murasaki Shikibu resists full explanation of her characters' motivations and inner lives; she presents human beings as ultimately mysterious, capable of surprising themselves and others. This aesthetic choice—leaving ambiguity rather than resolving it—reflects psychological wisdom: people cannot be fully known, even by themselves, and the attempt to achieve complete understanding often denies the reality of human complexity and unconscious drives.
