Jouissance in the Audience Experience

Designing for pleasure and delight—especially the unexpected, transgressive, or morally complex variety—rather than optimizing solely for comfort or validation.

Mura
Why It Matters

Murasaki Shikibu's characters experience complex pleasures: erotic joy, intellectual stimulation, aesthetic rapture, emotional catharsis—sometimes simultaneously with shame, guilt, or confusion. She doesn't simplify human pleasure into neat categories. Her work offers jouissance—that untranslatable French term for pleasure that exceeds simple satisfaction, that includes surprise, taboo, or complexity. Modern audience relationship often optimizes for engagement metrics that flatten pleasure into simple metrics: likes, shares, time-on-page. But genuine audience loyalty grows when creators offer richer pleasures: the delight of unexpected insight; the transgressive joy of encountering controversial ideas; the complex satisfaction of emotional truths that don't resolve cleanly. This requires trusting your audience with morally ambiguous characters, intellectually challenging ideas, and aesthetic experiences that don't fit neatly into algorithmic categories. Applied carefully, this principle means resisting oversimplification, honoring the sophistication of your audience's inner life, and creating experiences that surprise and delight rather than merely confirming existing preferences.
