The Donkey's Perspective

A practice of intentionally adopting an animal's viewpoint to challenge human assumptions about nature and reveal hidden ethical blind spots in how we treat other creatures.

Why It Matters

Nasreddin Hodja frequently appears riding backward on his donkey, seeing what others miss by reversing conventional perspective. In animal ethics, this teaches us to imaginatively inhabit the lived experience of creatures we domesticate or exploit. By asking "what does the donkey see that I don't?" we recognize that animals possess their own valid perspectives, desires, and forms of intelligence. This practice disrupts the human-centered worldview that justifies dominion over nature. Applied to our ethical relationship with animals, it means pausing before purchasing animal products, entering zoos, or making decisions affecting wildlife—and genuinely attempting to understand the impact from the animal's point of view, not merely human convenience or tradition.
