The Donkey's Question

Nasreddin's habit of asking absurd questions to reveal hidden assumptions about how we relate to nature and our own bodies in it.

Why It Matters

Nasreddin often asks questions that seem foolish but expose deep contradictions in human logic. Applied to biophilia, this teaches us to question why we build cities that isolate us from nature, then spend money to return to it. The Hodja's method invites us to ask: Why do we need a park to experience trees when we once lived among them? This innocent questioning dissolves the false boundary between 'civilized' and 'natural' life. By adopting the Donkey's Question practice, we become aware of the paradoxes we live within—the gym membership instead of a walk, the nature documentary instead of a forest. Nasreddin shows that wisdom begins when we notice our own contradictions with playful curiosity rather than shame.
