Examining the Examined Ascent

The practice of continuous self-questioning during mountain climbing to prevent self-deception and ego blindness.

Why It Matters

Nasreddin's core teaching emphasized the examined life—constantly questioning one's assumptions, motivations, and perceptions. In mountains, this becomes a safety and wisdom practice. Before each climb, the examined ascent requires asking: Why do I want this peak? What will it prove? Who am I trying to become? What am I avoiding in the lowlands? These questions aren't meant to paralyze but to clarify. Nasreddin would turn assumptions inside out, revealing hidden contradictions. Is the climb about conquering nature or surrendering to it? Are you seeking solitude or fleeing connection? The examined ascent practices this same reversal throughout the climb, catching moments when ego inflates or fear contracts the heart. This continuous questioning prevents the tunnel vision that leads to accidents and keeps climbers awake to the actual mountain in front of them rather than the imagined one in their heads.
