The Examined Harvest

Reflection practice that turns seasonal transitions into opportunities for questioning our assumptions about productivity and success.

Why It Matters

Each season invites examination: What did we plant, literally and metaphorically? What grew despite our intentions? What withered despite our care? The Examined Harvest extends the Socratic tradition into seasonal living, making each transition a moment for rigorous self-questioning. The Hodja's stories often end with uncomfortable laughter—the realization that what we thought was clever was foolish, or vice versa. Seasonal transitions offer similar revelations if we pause to look. When autumn arrives, examine: Did I plant what I truly valued, or what I thought I should want? Did summer's growth serve my examined life or my habitual patterns? Did I rest enough? Play enough? Learn enough? This practice transforms harvesting from mere accounting into profound inquiry. By examining each season's lessons, we gradually shift from unconsciously cycling through seasons to consciously participating in our own becoming.
