The Examined Shadow Self

A practice of conscious self-inquiry that meets the repressed, hidden, or denied aspects of ourselves that darkness naturally reveals.

Why It Matters

Night strips away the persona we maintain in daylight. Nasreddin Hodja, often portrayed as both fool and sage, embodies the shadow—the parts of ourselves we cannot control or explain. His stories invite radical honesty about contradiction: we are simultaneously ignorant and wise, lost and found, foolish and enlightened. The Examined Shadow Self is a deliberate practice of turning toward the aspects of our nature that daylight consciousness rejects: our fears, shame, impulses, and uncertainties. Rather than banishing these into unconsciousness, we examine them with the same playful curiosity the Hodja applies to paradox. This nighttime practice becomes transformative when we stop fighting darkness and instead ask: What is my darkness trying to teach me? What parts of myself can I only meet when the world's judgment dims?
