Asking the Foolish Question First

Starting every collecting decision with a deliberately naive question to bypass expertise and reconnect with genuine curiosity.

Why It Matters

Before acquiring anything, the Hodja method asks: 'But why?' Not strategically, but innocently—like a child seeing the object for the first time. This foolish-first approach strips away the justifications we've learned (investment potential, completion of sets, status signaling) and returns us to direct experience. Why do you want this specific seashell when you could have any seashell? What emotion does this broken cup evoke? Is it actually beautiful or have you been told it is? Nature exemplifies this: a bird doesn't collect according to logic but according to immediate recognition of utility or beauty. By asking foolish questions first, you collect with authenticity rather than inheritance. The examined joyful life insists that the childlike perspective isn't less sophisticated—it's more honest. Your collection becomes a record of genuine encounters rather than prescribed taste.
