The Paradox of Control

The insight that trying harder to control companion animals often backfires, while playful acceptance creates better outcomes.

Why It Matters

Nasreddin stories frequently show that pursuing a goal directly often leads nowhere, while approaching sideways or releasing the goal entirely yields results. With companion animals, forcing obedience through dominance creates fear and resistance; playful engagement creates cooperation. This paradox applies to training, behavior management, and even healing. A dog picks up on our anxiety during walks and pulls more; a relaxed, playful demeanor often produces the calm walk we wanted. Nasreddin teaches that wisdom includes recognizing when we're pushing against nature itself. Instead of "I must make my pet behave," the examined approach asks "What is this animal trying to communicate? What does it actually need?" The paradox dissolves when we stop trying to control outcomes and instead create conditions where animals naturally choose behaviors that align with our shared life together.
