Paradox of Ownership: Who Belongs to Whom?

Exploring the reversible relationship of possession where the animal owns us as much as we own them.

Why It Matters

The Hodja and his donkey exist in constant ambiguity about who owns whom, who serves whom, who teaches whom. We speak of 'owning' a companion animal, yet anyone who lives with animals knows the truth is far more mysterious. The animal reorganizes our schedule, our space, our emotional life. We arrange our vacations around their care; we structure our homes for their comfort; we check our phone for their wellbeing. The Nasreddin tradition loves this reversal. The examined joyful life means acknowledging that possession works both directions simultaneously. You own your cat; your cat owns you. You care for your dog; your dog cares for you through reliable presence and unconditional companionship. This paradox dissolves the artificial hierarchy of owner and owned. Instead of fighting this mutual belonging, the Hodja would embrace it joyfully. You are claimed by your animal as much as you claim them. This recognition brings humility and deepens relationship. Rather than defending your independence from your pet, surrender to the ways they have claimed you, reorganized you, and made you belong to them.
