The Question as Gateway

Using curious, sometimes naive questioning to unlock new perspectives and expose assumptions in our thinking.

Why It Matters

Hodja's most effective teaching method involves asking questions that sound innocent but dismantle certainty: 'Why did you not lend me your pot if you are not using it?' His genius lies not in providing answers but in the quality of inquiry itself. The Question as Gateway recognizes that genuine examination begins with genuine curiosity, not with predetermined conclusions. In The examined playful life, we practice asking the kinds of questions a playful fool might ask—questions that seem simple or even stupid but reveal deeper truths when genuinely pursued. This practice shifts us from passive acceptance or rigid skepticism toward active, engaged wondering. By asking 'Why?' and 'What if?' without immediately settling for convenient answers, we develop intellectual humility and openness. Nature itself operates through questions: the seed asking how to become a tree, the river asking which way to flow. This Sophos tradition teaches that the examined life flourishes when we maintain the beginner's mind, asking fresh questions about things we thought we already understood, treating existence itself as an open inquiry rather than a solved problem.
