The Question Behind the Question

Using animals' mysterious behaviors to practice genuine curiosity instead of assuming you understand them.

Why It Matters

Nasreddin Hodja's stories consistently feature him asking absurd questions that reveal hidden assumptions in everyone else's thinking. Applied to companion animals, this practice means resisting the urge to immediately interpret or judge your pet's behavior, instead asking: what is the actual question my animal is expressing? When your dog paces anxiously, the obvious answer is 'nervousness,' but the deeper question might be 'what is my body trying to communicate?' This practice develops what the Hodja modeled: the ability to stay in productive confusion rather than settling for premature certainty. Your cat's aloofness isn't necessarily rejection—it might be teaching you about boundaries. Your bird's repetitive calling might be revealing something about attention and rhythm you need to learn. This framework transforms pet behavior from a problem to solve into a koan to contemplate, honoring the animal's alterity while deepening your own self-knowledge.
