The Question Instead of the Answer

Using open-ended inquiry about your pet's behavior and needs rather than assuming you know what they require or want.

Why It Matters

Hodja's teaching method relies on questions that expose assumptions rather than answers that claim certainty. Applied to companion animals, this means approaching each moment with genuine curiosity rather than predetermined solutions. When your dog pulls on the leash, instead of immediately correcting, ask: what are they sensing that I'm not? When your cat knocks things off tables, instead of punishing, inquire: what need is this behavior expressing? This questioning stance prevents the arrogance of thinking we fully understand our animals. It keeps us humble, observant, and responsive rather than reactive. The tradition of the examined life means examining our own certainties about our pets—how much of our interpretation reflects their reality versus our projections? Hodja often found that the obvious answer was wrong, and asking better questions revealed unexpected truths. With companion animals, this practice deepens observation and creates space for genuine dialogue rather than monologue. By releasing our need to know and embracing playful inquiry, we discover that our pets are far more complex, intelligent, and communicative than our assumptions allowed. Questions open doors; answers close them.
