The Question Instead of the Answer

Nasreddin Hodja was famous for responding to direct questions with more questions, or with stories that offered no clear resolution. The Question Instead of the Answer applies this to animal ethics, rejecting dogmatic positions in favor of genuine inquiry. Rather than declaring what animals deserve or what humans may do, we ask: What does this animal need? What am I not seeing? What would I need to change in my life if I truly honored this creature's existence? This practice prevents the spiritual pride that often accompanies moral certainty. It opens us to complexity: the farmer who loves his animals and must slaughter them; the predator and prey both part of nature; the human who must eat yet wishes to minimize harm. Living in genuine question rather than defended answer keeps us humble, curious, and responsive to the unique moral challenges each situation presents.
