Reading the Animal as Text

Recognizing that we constantly interpret our pets' behavior through human frameworks, creating stories that reveal us more than them.

Why It Matters

Just as Hodja's stories function as mirrors reflecting the reader's assumptions back at themselves, companion animals function as blank texts upon which we project meaning. We claim to know our pets' inner lives while actually narrating our own desires. A cat's aloofness becomes wisdom; a dog's loyalty becomes unconditional love. Hodja teaches through stories that seem simple until we examine our interpretation of them. Similarly, examining how we read our animals reveals our own assumptions about trust, love, and companionship. This isn't cynical denial of genuine connection—rather, it's an invitation to notice the gap between the animal we live with and the animal we've constructed mentally. The practice involves regular reflection: What story am I telling about my pet? What does that story reveal about what I need? By becoming aware of our interpretations, we create space for authentic encounter with the actual being sharing our home, beyond our narratives.
