Abhyasa as Evidence-Based Practice

Sustained, systematic practice grounded in direct experience—the yogic foundation for knowledge, presenting Indigenous methodology that mirrors Western scientific experimentation and empirical validation.

Why It Matters

Abhyasa means continuous, dedicated practice with full attention over extended time. Patanjali presented this as essential to genuine knowledge: you cannot understand meditation theoretically; you must practice directly and repeatedly. This is Indigenous scientific methodology: systematic experimentation on oneself, careful observation of results, and refinement based on feedback. Western science employs similar logic: hypothesis formation, repeated testing, measurable outcomes, peer validation. Both traditions recognize that knowing requires doing, not mere intellectual study. Abhyasa differs from casual engagement; it demands discipline, consistency, and honest observation of results. Modern evidence-based medicine uses this principle: treatments require rigorous testing, replication, and outcome measurement. Yogic traditions applied abhyasa to consciousness for millennia before Western science formalized experimental method. This concept bridges traditions by recognizing both as practice-based: Indigenous knowledge emerges from sustained engagement with phenomena; Western science formalizes this through controlled protocols. The dialogue shows that evidence-based methodology existed in multiple cultures—not exclusively Western. By integrating Indigenous abhyasa principles with Western scientific rigor, we develop stronger approaches to knowledge generation respecting both systematic practice and measurable validation.
