Yoga Sutras 1.12-1.14 emphasize abhyasa (disciplined practice) and vairagya (non-attachment) as complementary forces for mental stability. DBT's emotional dysregulation treatment mirrors this balance: abhyasa appears as consistent skill practice—mindfulness, emotion regulation, distress tolerance—while vairagya emerges in distress tolerance's acceptance modules and radical acceptance work. Many dysregulated individuals oscillate between rigid striving ("fix me now") and helpless detachment ("nothing works"). Patanjali's framework honors both: persistent training of mind and acceptance of what cannot be forced. This integration prevents the burnout of endless striving and the despair of passivity. Clients learn that emotional mastery requires simultaneous effort and surrender—practicing DBT skills diligently while accepting that emotions will arise, that pain is inevitable, and that freedom lies in skillful response rather than outcome control.
