Patanjali prescribes two complementary approaches to transformation: abhyasa (disciplined, sustained practice) and vairagya (non-attachment to outcomes). For cognitive distortions, abhyasa means repeatedly returning to accurate perception—not once identifying a distortion, but practicing accurate interpretation hundreds of times until neural pathways rewire. Vairagya prevents the distortion of the distortion-work itself: releasing attachment to achieving perfect thoughts or punishing yourself for lingering distortions. Many people sabotage cognitive change by becoming rigidly attached to eliminating distortions (creating new distortions about distortions). This balanced framework—consistent, gentle practice paired with release of control—creates conditions for sustainable transformation.
