Why It Matters

Patanjali identifies five kleshas—avidya (ignorance), asmita (ego), raga (attachment), dvesha (aversion), and abhinivesha (fear of death)—as the root causes of emotional turmoil. Rather than treating emotional regulation as surface-level coping, Patanjali's framework goes to fundamental causes. Avidya, misperception of reality, creates all other kleshas; when we misunderstand ourselves and the world, we generate fear, grasping, and resistance. Asmita, the ego-sense, drives emotional reactivity through pride and shame. Raga and dvesha—attraction and repulsion—fuel emotional volatility as we chase pleasure and avoid pain. Abhinivesha, the unconscious fear of cessation, underlies existential anxiety. By understanding these five root causes, emotional regulation becomes targeted and intelligent. Rather than treating anxiety, anger, or sadness as isolated problems, this framework reveals their common source. Emotional regulation practices then work systemically to address avidya through direct perception and each klesha through specific techniques. This diagnostic depth prevents superficial symptom management and points toward genuine transformation of our relationship with experience itself.
