Ahamkara: The Ego Part and Self-Identification

Patanjali's concept of ahamkara—the sense of individual ego and false identification—reveals how parts become rigidly attached to roles and beliefs, obscuring the true Self.

Why It Matters

Ahamkara, meaning 'I-maker,' refers to the ego's false sense of separate identity that obscures our true nature. In Internal Family Systems terms, this is how parts become over-identified with their protective roles and beliefs about reality. A part carrying shame becomes defined by unworthiness; a controlling part believes it must manage everything to prevent disaster. Patanjali teaches that liberation comes through recognizing this false identification. When we apply this wisdom to Parts work, we learn to help each part release its grip on its identity-role while honoring its protective function. This distinction allows parts to soften, access curiosity about their origins, and eventually unburden themselves of their extreme beliefs and traumatic memories.
