Physical postures that safely reintegrate the body's wisdom, release held tension, and restore the felt sense of safety in physical form.

Why It Matters

Asana, often misunderstood as mere physical exercise, represents in Patanjali's system the attainment of a stable, comfortable seat—a foundation for meditation and healing. For trauma survivors, asana becomes essential nervous system medicine. Trauma dissociates individuals from their bodies, which are perceived as unreliable, dangerous, or numb. Gentle, mindful asana practice reverses this dissociation by creating opportunity to inhabit the body with awareness and compassion. Holding poses teaches the nervous system that it can remain present with sensation, gradually expanding the window of tolerance. Asana releases somatic holding patterns—the unconscious muscular contractions that lock trauma in the physical body. As tension releases, trapped emotions and memories surface for processing. Importantly, asana in this context is not athletic achievement but gentle re-occupancy of bodily home. Through sustained, aware presence in simple poses, survivors rebuild the body-mind connection necessary for integrated healing, transforming the body from enemy territory into sacred ground of recovery.
