Asmita is the ego-identification that creates the 'I am' belief in distorted self-concepts; dissolving it releases you from distortion-prone identity.
Asmita—the 'I-maker' or ego sense—is a fundamental cognitive distortion: the false equation of consciousness with mind and body. Patanjali identifies this as one of the five kleshas, the afflictions that bind us to suffering. When asmita is strong, you unconsciously reinforce distortions because they protect the false self you've identified with. A perfectionist distortion, imposter syndrome, or shame-based belief gains power through asmita. By studying this concept, you recognize that your sense of 'I' is constructed, not fixed. The practice involves witnessing the ego's operations without merging with them. As asmita weakens through meditation and self-inquiry, cognitive distortions lose their gravitational pull. You see thoughts and beliefs as content passing through awareness, not as defining who you are.
