Atman: Discovering Self-Worth Beyond Attachment

Recognizing the eternal, intrinsic self (Atman) that exists independent of your partner's validation, the foundation of secure attachment.

Why It Matters

Atman in Patanjali's and broader yogic philosophy refers to the eternal self or soul—the unchanging, intrinsic consciousness that exists independent of circumstances, relationships, or external validation. Anxiously attached individuals have largely lost connection with Atman; their sense of self becomes entirely dependent on their partner's reflection and approval. Without their partner's love, they feel they don't exist. This is the tragedy of insecure attachment: the self has been lost in the desperate attempt to secure attachment. Patanjali's yoga practices systematically reconnect you with Atman—the unchanging witness consciousness within. This reconnection is revolutionary for attachment healing. When you access Atman—the awareness that you exist as a whole person regardless of your relationship status—you're no longer enslaved by the fear of abandonment. You can love your partner genuinely because you're not dependent on them for your fundamental existence or worth. Secure attachment paradoxically requires becoming less attached to needing attachment. This doesn't mean becoming cold or indifferent; it means your love becomes a gift freely given rather than a desperate bid for survival. Recognizing Atman is recognizing that you were whole before your partner, and you'll be whole if they leave—this transforms your entire relational capacity.
