Avidya: Ignorance as Root Distortion

Avidya is fundamental ignorance or misperception—the primary distortion from which all other cognitive errors stem, requiring direct inquiry to dissolve.

Why It Matters

Patanjali identifies avidya as the root cause of all suffering and distortion. It is not mere lack of knowledge but active misperception—confusing the temporary with the permanent, the painful with the pleasurable, and the non-self with the self. Most cognitive distortions spring from this fundamental delusion. When you catastrophize, you mistake a temporary setback for permanent failure; when you personalize, you misidentify external events as self-directed. These are expressions of avidya. The yoga tradition teaches that avidya cannot be overcome through intellectual understanding alone but through direct, embodied insight into the true nature of reality. Addressing cognitive distortions requires moving beyond correcting individual thoughts to questioning the foundational assumptions and filters through which you perceive. This requires sustained attention, self-inquiry, and willingness to examine your deepest beliefs about self, worth, and possibility.
